Tutoring
Experienced tutors are available for individualized help. The terms of the tutoring are arranged between the student(s) and tutor. A list of qualified tutors (including those who specialize in TOEFL preparation) is available upon request. In addition, instructors in the IEP are available, at no charge, for individualized help during their regularly scheduled office hours each week.
Cost: $15-25/hour (can be shared with one other IEP student, for a split cost of $7.50 - 12.50/hour)
Conversation Partners
Conversation partners (both undergraduate and graduate students) are available for one-on-one discussions about academic life, current events and general topics of interest. The conversation partners are not trained tutors but are native speakers of English who can provide the IEP student with a contact for information about life at UAH and in Huntsville. Whenever possible, IEP students will be paired with partners who share their interests and major field of study.
Cost: $10/hour (can be shared with one other IEP student, for a split cost of $5/hour)
Shuttle Service
There is a Friday-night shuttle service that is free of charge for UAH students. The shuttle runs from 5:00 - 10:00 p.m. and drops students at one of three destinations: Madison Square Mall, Madison Square 12 Theatre and SuperWalmart. Madison Square Mall is the largest mall in Huntsville and is home to over 40 stores, shops and restaurants, including The American Cafe. In walking distance of these destinations are numerous shops and restaurants, including Macaroni Grill, McDonalds, Logan's Steakhouse, TJ Maxx, etc.
Additional shuttle trips can be scheduled if sufficient interest merits. Students who would like to arrange trips on Friday afternoons can speak with their instructors or contact the director of IEP at iep@uah.edu.
Extracurricular Activities
The IEP organizes a start-of-session get-together at local restaurants. The program provides transportation to and from the event. Participation, however, is optional. In addition, throughout the session, the program offers the option of excursions to sporting events and local points of interest (including the U.S. Space and Rocket Center, home to Space Camp). These trips are offered on an optional basis. Admission costs are the responsibility of individual students but the entire cost of a sessions' worth of excursions would be estimated at no more than $100. Transportation is provided free of charge for these events.
For more information about any of the services listed here, contact the director of IEP at iep@uah.edu.
